I need you to understand that when I was very young, I really liked dinosaurs. Oddly big into Catholicism, too, but mostly dinosaurs. Dinosaurs evolved into Magic: the Gathering, then League of Legends, then Apex: Legends, then Flesh & Blood.

Back when I liked dinosaurs, I also very much enjoyed the magic of organizing letters into words into sentences that somehow took the kaleidoscope-skewed color explosion in my tiny child brain and turned it into a story other people could see in their own.

When I stopped memorizing dinosaur taxonomy and started filing away in my noggin every Magic card ever for some reason, I kept my love affair with language burning hot by writing about the game with the confidence only a sixteen-year old can have. I didn't let it flame out by honing the craft over a half-a-decade spent writing about Magic before discovering League of Legends and its creator, Riot Games.

I slipped Magic to the back burner to simmer when the opportunity of a lifetime arose to interview at Riot. Only problem was that I hadn't much played the game despite my affection for the lore and the company making it. From being super low level during my phone interview, it took thirty days of dedicated League gameplay, hours and hours on end, but I managed to hit the player level cap in time to start grinding ranked before they flew me out there so I could answer honestly that I was Gold Elo when they asked.

But, oh yeah, I was writing that whole time. Hot and heavy with the writing like we were seniors listening to Dashboard Confessional after one too many bottles of Boone's Farm. And it was a writing gig I was aiming for, so getting the job meant my sidepiece turning into my main chick, basically the hitting the jackpot in every possible sense.

Of course, as we all know, California sank into the sea during the Atlantis invasion. I woke one haze-stained morning serenaded not by seagulls and swaying waves, but the shrieks and barks of yelping cars frantic on the freeway. The dream dead, I barely escaped back to the Midwest in time to dodge the marauding hordes of displaced two-commas.

Fortunately, the comic book shop where I grew up among the stacks and at the gaming tables happened to be for sale, and I was extraordinarily lucky to be in a position to take my shot at stewarding the store and community I love so much. But you'll notice it's been a bit since I mentioned my true love, and she sure doesn't like it when I leave her alone so long.

With my brother's encouragement, I've tackled the task of tidying up my notebooks and typing them up so I can share 'em with folks who might enjoy them. That's what this page is mostly gonna be about. This here weekly newsletter thingy is for assorted other things I don't have anywhere else to stick 'em, including indulging my life-long fascination with late-night monologue writing.

You're as caught up as you're probably gonna be when it comes to whatever the heck is going on here, and if you feel like sticking around, I'm sure there's a subscribe button you can smash, or just, I dunno, share it and tell your friends?

In any case, you've read a little over 500 words of mine by now, so you know whether or not you wanna read any more. If you don't, I'm a little bummed, but, gosh, there's a whole lotta other internet for you to enjoy and I hope you have a good time exploring! If you do, welcome. Can't wait to see you next time.

And cat tax.
